7 ways to get rid of a cold fast!
Winter is here and with it comes the cold & flu season. Many of us have busy lives and simply don’t have time to be sick. It can mean falling behind at work, school, study and for some a loss of income as a result of not working or staying home to care for sick kids. Not to mention the horrible feeling that comes with being sick.
No matter our age, most of the time when we are sick we look to our Mums; the carers and nurturers, as when we were young they seemed to know exactly how to make us feel better!
So we have put together a list of 7 ways to get rid of a cold fast as recommended by non other than MUMS!
1. Vicks Baby Balsam on feet
The menthol in vicks can have a soothing effect on your body. By rubbing Vick’s onto babies chest, it can help clear the nasal passage and soothe a cough.
And whilst there is no medical explanation as to why it works, Mums are swearing by putting Vick’s on the soul of babys feet and covering with socks during the night.
2. Onion under the bed
This one was said to be a bit of an “old wives tale” however many studies have shown onions have some great healing quality’s! These include it being an anti-inflammatory & a natural antibiotic. Onions also have the ability to loosen up hard phlegm. Cutting an onion in half and placing it around the home or under the bed while you sleep can mean a restful sleep without the feeling of being blocked up.
Probiotics can help to support a child’s immune health. Probiotics are made up of good bacteria. This good bacteria can help your body fight off bad bacteria when you have too much of it (like when you’re feeling unwell), helping you feel better faster!
We recommend speaking to your pediatrician or pharmacist to find out which probiotic is best for your child.
4. Hydralyte icy poles
It’s no secret staying hydrated when unwell is the key to feeling better.
But when it comes to kids it can be difficult to get them to drink water, especially of a sore throat is involved. Hydralyte icy poles make it easier to keep your kids hydrated with a range of flavours it’ll feel like they are having a treat! The cold can numb their throat all while keeping them hydrated!
5. Honey water
There is a wide range of benefits to drinking warm water with honey! Honey can reduce inflammation, give you energy, it can naturally fight bacteria and helps boost your immune system. It also helps soothe a sore throat and lubricates the throat helping a persistent dry cough.
NOTE: this is only recommended for children over the age of 12 months.
6. Saline nose spray
A saltwater solution that is sprays into the nostrils. Fess little nose is a common one used amongst mums, safe from newborn age. It also comes with an aspirator to help remove excess mucus so your little one can breathe easier!
7. Steam Vaporiser
Ever noticed that you feel better while having a hot shower when your sick? This is because the steam in the room eases congestion leaving you more clear headed.
Steam vaporisers mimic this and are great in bedrooms to allow easier breathing overnight. Make sure you use them in well vented areas and are using accordingly to instructions. Adding essential oils can be very beneficial. We recommend Eucalyptus which clears the sinuses and acts as a natural disinfectant.
